Jeep XJ Cherokee Models Sold in Australia
1994 - 1995
The first models to arrive had no air bags, no rear head rests, and a steering wheel from the dark ages.
But it had a 4.0 lt inline 6 with 4 speed auto trans, LSD, "shift on the fly" selectrac 4WD system electric windows and lremote locking.
The upmarket Limited had full Leather, power seats, woodgrain, 17" alloys, ABS brakes and stylish looks.
1995 - 1996
These had an upgraded interior with drivers airbag and a more modern steering wheel. They also got rear headrests, and improved front seats.
There was also a model called a Cherokee Classic which came in both Sport and Limited versions. The main issue with this model was that somebody forgot to tick the LSD box when they were ordered and to compensate Jeep Australia included a chrome grill, a nudge bar and 10 stack CD player with 30 CD's to go with it.
1996 - 1997
These were fitted with the LSD and also had a new engine block upgrade as the early ones had a tendancy for piston slap even when new. So the 96 got the better engine.
1997 - 2001
This was a major facelift model for the XJ and it received an all new interior and upgraded exterior as well as drive and passenger airbags, new dash and more refined driveline.
This model only came as a Sport model with no Limiteds arriving until later as a special edition.
We also saw the introduction of the Turbo Diesel version with it's 2.5L VM Motori engine and 5 speed manual transmission.
